Greetings, All!
If you¹ve been awaiting the PAF & NAF Forms so you can enroll in SFC¹12, order T-shirts or Raffle tickets, and/or just get more info, we¹ve had so many little changes (for the better) since July 31 that the Forms are still being revised. Hang in there.
You¹ll find some additions to the Con Crew (see signature at bottom of post). Our main news: we have some important changes in SFC¹s themes and colors, based on our research, so here¹s an update.
If you remember, we announced our major theme was Celebrating ³The Year of Mayan Culture² and how we¹d be learning some new things. Well, the first new thing WE learned was that using the adjective ³Mayan² is only correct in relation to aspects of the language; the correct terms are Maya culture, Maya calendar, Maya people, etc. It doesn¹t sound quite right to our ear, since we¹ve heard the other so often, but we¹re going to bend to accuracy. Therefore, we now list our themes as:
Celebrating ³The Year of Maya Culture²
Let¹s learn some New Things (you know how Starman loves that!) while we take an affectionate look at the kerfuffle over whether or not the Maya calendar predicts the end of the world as we know it on 12/21/12.
Celebrating the number 12.
SFC 2012. beginning Oct 12th, is the 12th biennial FAMILY-CON. [Dozen that sound worth mentioning?] That¹s right! It¹s been twenty-two years since the first Reunion Party at Patrick Culliton¹s home in 1990. [The very first STARMAN convention was organized by Annemarie Schomaker (SCA) in San Diego in 1987, and there¹ve been numerous other international conventions, but SFC just refers to Family Reunion Parties in the L.A. area.]
When it comes to colors, we announced those as Sapphire and Aubergine (which are the company¹s names given by Gildan Activewear for the two main T-shirt colors we¹ve chosen). We¹d already decided to refer to the latter as ³Eggplant² (avoiding the embarrassment of trying out our French accents). Personally, I haven¹t cared for the term ³Sapphire²; it has no STARMAN connection, and I think of sapphires as more true-blue gems than the actual T-shirt color, which is more teal-ish. Id been using the term ³Electric Blue,² but I worried that would get confused with our alternative ³Royal Blue.² Then, during my research, I discovered a mysterious color called ³Azul Maya²!
This bright blue/turquoise pigment was used by pre-Hispanic peoples of southern Mexico and Guatemala -- Maya, Tolteca, Totonaca and Azteca -- beginning around the year 750. After Spanish conquest, it was painted on the walls of a number of colonial convents until around the year 1580, after which its use disappeared in Central America (though it seems to have been imported into Cuba and was, for a time, called Havana Blue). In the world of the Maya, it has survived on striking temple murals, ceramics, sculptures and other artifacts.
In fact, its survival is one of the main attributes that sets this pigment apart. It is impervious to weather (heat, sunlight, cold) and to both concentrated acids and caustic alkalis, maintaining its brilliant color through the centuries. And for centuries, its origins -- and unrecorded recipe -- remained a mystery, despite decades of extensive scientific research and experimentation. Finally, thanks largely to the efforts of Mexican archaeologist/chemist Constantino Reyes-Valerio, the mystery is solved: Azul Maya (Maya Blue) is a compound of macerated leaves from the American Indigo plant -- locally called Añil and an uncharacteristically fibrous clay known as palygorskite. Filtered and dried, then fired at 190ºC for some five hours, this results in a truly remarkable combination of organic and inorganic elements and is considered the first stable organic pigment. In fact, now its recipe can be replicated, there¹s interest in industrial use for this coloring that is beautiful, versatile, economical, extremely durable and environmentally benign. Does that sound like a STARMAN color or what?
The color itself can vary visually (like yarn dye lots), depending on the particular batch of ingredients, processing, surface to which it¹s applied, etc., so it can shade light and dark, between blue and turquoise. So Bruce and I feel comfortable taking a little liberty and using this ancient color for our formerly Sapphire T-shirts. [Note: Azul is Spanish for Blue.]
So SFC 2012¹s official colors are Eggplant and Azul Maya. When you finally get those Forms in the next coupla days, you¹ll find those terms in place for T-shirt colors. And you¹ll find that URL to show you the colors online!
Speaking of which, I¹d better get back to those Forms. . . .
Stay Tuned, Vicki for Bruce Jividen
P.S. THANK YOU to those of you who have already sent SFC payments! Much appreciated.
