I spoke with Michael Cavanaugh at one of the Starman Family Cons. I told him that I had originally detested "George Fox" because I thought that he was such a screw-up, but several years later, realized that I had been attracted to the show by the father-son relationship and that "Fox" represented a threat to that relationship, the kind of relationship that I always wanted to have with my father. He told me that several other fans had expressed the same thoughts to him. I remember how thrilled I was when I watched the "Fever" episode for the first time and thought, "We've finally gotten rid of George Fox so he won't be bothering Starman and Scott anymore." Alas, it didn't last.
Charles Lietwiler
Dear Charles:
You probably don't remember me. I was at a number of the earlier conventions and did attend the last one after a long dry spell. I was one of those quiet mousy people others don't remember. It amazed my how many were new, having seen the series in syndication and then found Spotlight Starman and spent their money coming to meet like minded people although there was no possibility of the show coming back.
At first I didn't like the George Fox character, but soon realized Fox was what made the series move. By move, I mean he moved it from one location to another where the Starman became involved with other people. That was what kept things going. I also envisioned many future interactions between Starman and Fox. I know I was devastated when I found it had been cancelled. I hadn't seen all the episodes and finally managed to find Sporlight Starman and was soon put in touch with Hilda Johnson. Hilda sent me those I had missed..
I have written volumes of pure Starman stories, (cross-overs haven't interested me) and have developed different outcomes about those interactions, but in the back of my mind I always envisioned, if left together, Fox would realize he was chasing the wrong people and ultimatley could become a close friend instead of an enemy.
It still amazes me how many of our number received , as you have stated, satisfaction with their lives through Starman.
I will be looking for you at the October gathering,
Joyce Fossek
