Wow. I watched the first 2 episodes of the DVD and I was flooded with memories. Even though I haven't watched the show in years..I remembered all of the dialog like it was just yesterday. The 2nd episode was the only one I have never seen so finally being able to watch it after waiting all these years was wonderful . It feels like I'm catching up on "old times".
That show is a classic. It stands the test of time. It is just as current as anything else on TV. I am enjoying it immensely! Marilyn

Episode #2 is one of my favorites. Especially the dialog. Haggling with the used car salesman, the scene in the cafe where the mother says, " I can Breath" in the country and Starman replies "I breath everywhere", the scene in the cabin where Starman suggests that he and the mother can share one of the beds and that Scott and the girl can share the other. Scott tells him, "You just don't do stuff like that" and Staman replies, "But if we do it, then it's done." Later that night, outside, Scott looking up at the sky and asking, "So, which one is it?" Starman replies, "There, that one just over the horizon." It gave me a chill but I also recognized an error. To a sailor, if something is "over the horizon", it can't be seen. "Above the horizon" would have been more accurate. The scene where Starman calms down an angry, growling dog by lowering the frequency of his brain waves (gave me an inspiration for one of the uses of the sphere that I discussed in the "It's Not Magic" article). The scene in the cave where Scott loses his sphere and tells Starman, "I can't do it" when Starman tells him he can calm down the puma. Starman replies something like, "Yes, you can. You are my son". Finally, as they are ready to leave, Scot calls out "Come on, dad". Starman gets into the car and says, "Scott, you called me dad." Scott replies, "Only to get your attention, don't fall apart." Starman moved me that way that no other series ever had before or since. I think part of the reason was that I recognized so many scenes that involved something that I wished I had done with my father. I would have loved to have shared watching the episodes with him and discussing them afterwards. Unfortunately, he died in 1978. I quoted all of the dialog from memory, so if I misquoted something, I apologize.

Just finished watching all my Starman dvds. Even though I have them all and watched them recently it was reat to see them in order of release. Feels like it was just yesterday when I was watching Starman fpr the first time. Have also recently watched another show I enjoyed (Scarecrow & Mrs King) and noticed so many of the same faces on both shows.

Episode #9 (Society's Pet) had a line that struck me in the heart. It was the scene in which Starman and Scott were walking down the path past the mansion and Starman was explaining that, under the proposal made by Antonia Weyburn, Scott would stay but Starman would have to leave. Scot told his father. "If you go, I go too. Besides, how long would you last without me to take care of you?" Instead of becoming angry as my father would have, Starman replied, humorously, "Is that what you do?" I told Christopher Barnes in a tape that I made for him in 1996, "If I had ever had a moment like that with my father, I would remember it for the rest of my life". I would have been thrilled to death if he had considered me to be his equal.
And, of course, there was the scene in the hallway after dinner when Scott accidentally knocked the vase off the table and it broke into many small pieces. Choking back her anger, Antonia said, "Fortunately, it was not an important piece." Mitchell, the butler, who arrived with a broom and dust pan to clean up the mess, said "Quite right, madam, there's another one just like it in the Louvre, if I'm not mistaken." I thought that that was one of the greatest put downs I had ever heard.

I saw it not so much as Scott proclaiming to be equal, as Scott professing his deep love for his dad in a slightly humorous way, which in Starman''s case also carried a lot of truth. Each needed the other, and each life was enhanced because of the other.
My second favorite line is in "Fathers and Sons" Episode 19, where Paul asks Scott, "How am I doing - as a father?" Only a Starman could ask such an extraordinary question of his son.
Both illustrate a father-son relationship never duplicated again on TV.

I should add that my son, who was Scott's age in 1986, when we watched the shows together, came up with a corollary. Whenever he needed something, he'd say, "Don't worry, you'll get it all back when I take care of you in your old age!"
We'll see.

You did an amazing job quoting the scenes. What made the show unique and a step above every show I've seen since, was it's sincerity-It brought to the surface the feeling that all people are hoping to find- a connection.. the day you realize that you are in this life together- not as advisories-but as partners in whatever fate has in store- you may not know the other person very well-but you know they love you and you trust them for it. It brought out all of those emotions and more- you could laugh at Paul's reactions to the new experiences in life- You could cry with Scott when the frustration of not finding his mother got to be too much for a young boy. Episode #2 is one of my favorites. Especially the dialog. Haggling with the used car salesman, the scene in the cafe where the mother says, " I can Breath" in the country and Starman replies "I breath everywhere", the scene in the cabin where Starman suggests that he and the mother can share one of the beds and that Scott and the girl can share the other. Scott tells him, "You just don't do stuff like that" and Staman replies, "But if we do it, then it's done." Later that night, outside, Scott looking up at the sky and asking, "So, which one is it?" Starman replies, "There, that one just over the horizon." It gave me a chill but I also recognized an error. To a sailor, if something is "over the horizon", it can't be seen. "Above the horizon" would have been more accurate. The scene where Starman calms down an angry, growling dog by lowering the frequency of his brain waves (gave me an inspiration for one of the uses of the sphere that I discussed in the "It's Not Magic" article). The scene in the cave where Scott loses his sphere and tells Starman, "I can't do it" when Starman tells him he can calm down the puma. Starman replies something like, "Yes, you can. You are my son". Finally, as they are ready to leave, Scot calls out "Come on, dad". Starman gets into the car and says, "Scott, you called me dad." Scott replies, "Only to get your attention, don't fall apart." Starman moved me that way that no other series ever had before or since. I think part of the reason was that I recognized so many scenes that involved something that I wished I had done with my father. I would have loved to have shared watching the episodes with him and discussing them afterwards. Unfortunately, he died in 1978. I quoted all of the dialog from memory, so if I misquoted something, I apologize.

Wow. I watched the first 2 episodes of the DVD and I was flooded with memories. Even though I haven't watched the show in years..I remembered all of the dialog like it was just yesterday. The 2nd episode was the only one I have never seen so finally being able to watch it after waiting all these years was wonderful . It feels like I'm catching up on "old times".
That show is a classic. It stands the test of time. It is just as current as anything else on TV. I am enjoying it immensely! Marilyn
