This message was ready to go out at 3:30pm today, but I found my Internet and landline were down (a very frequent occurrence these days). They came back on sometime around 7:30pm, at which time I learned STARMANET had been down. I had a lot of mail resulting from #T-1 message and had to process that before sending this out. Sorry for yet another delay.

********************STARMAN FAMILY-CON 2014 COMMEMORATIVE T-SHIRTS
Shirts must be PLEDGED by TUESDAY Sept. 9 (reaching Vicki via email or phone* by 9am Pacific) to ensure getting your preferred size/style/color(s). After that, no guarantees except there WILL be extra shirts, though maybe not the size or color you'd most like. So, if you miss the deadline, go ahead and order to put yourself on the first-come-first-served waiting list.
*(BTW: if you call me and get a machine, PLEASE ALWAYS leave a message. Sometimes I can¹t get to the phone before the recording starts. And if the landline¹s down, there¹s a backup voicemail service I can check for messages.)
You may order shirts whether or not you attend. They need not be paid for until later. A pledge is NOT a promise to buy (see How Pledging Works below).
FABRIC & DESIGN These super-soft Bella+Canvas brand shirts are 100% combed & ringspun cotton jersey (the 2 heathered colors = 52% Cotton; 48% Poly) and available in up to 9 colors, depending on sleeve length and size. The design (printed in full color) will, as always, be revealed for the first time on the Friday of the Con, but we can tell you it'll be in keeping with our 2014 themes:
- Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the premiere of the STARMAN movie in
December 1984.
- Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the debut of the Ford Mustang in April
1964 (remember the ³souped-up orange Mustang² that took Starman and Jenny to Meteor Crater in the Movie?).
- Celebrating the Chinese Year of the Horse, represented especially by Cachuma
Star, the rescued ³orange (sorrel) Mustang² SSI sponsors at the Wild Horse Sanctuary in Shingletown (Northern) CA. See 2 photos of him at: <tinyurl/CachumaStar>
The design also includes a cameo appearance of the El Segundo Blue Butterfly. (This endangered species is the longtime symbol for the city itself and is now designated as the "Official STARMAN insect.")
Sandra Ragan (SCA) and Vicki Werkley (NCA) are creating this very special souvenir, consulting with Bruce Jividen (OR) and with Liz Turner (NCA) -- who is also
VW¹s partner in ordering, acquiring and distributing the finishedshirts.
How PLEDGING works: On TUES 9/9 we must place our completed order of how many shirts, in what sizes, styles (short or long sleeves) and colors, were purchasing. We always order extras, but not generally the more expensive shirts (larger sizes, long sleeves); most extras are Large or XL. It's VERY important---especially if you wear 2X-4XL to PLEDGE IMMEDIATELY. Since you can't see the design before ordering, you¹re not obligated to take the shirt if you change your mind. Remember, a PLEDGE means "I plan to / hope to" NOT "I promise to buy.") If you¹re only attending on Saturday and wish to wear your new shirt during the Con, feel free to change into it in the nearby restrooms.
You need not pay for shirts beforehand, especially if you're not attending (that way, after SFC you can see an image of the design and just cancel with no lost postage for us if you decide against it). But if you ARE attending, it may be more convenient for both you and Vicki if you include shirt cost in your enrollment check. Then, if you change your mind, the money will be refunded at the event.

Since we¹re celebrating horses, it might be fun to refer to our colors in reference to actual horse coat colors. Cachuma Star is a Sorrel: a reddish golden (orange). The blue we picked is our old friend Royal, but there¹s a twist: it¹s heathered with tiny white flecks. Horses who have lighter hairs mixed with the darker body coat are called Roans.
So our official SFC 2014 ³Year of the Horse² Con Colors are Sorrel & Blue Roan.
But there¹re also SIX other colors to choose from for Short-Sleeve T-shirts!
<>The SFC 2014 T-shirt Colors . . . <> What we¹re calling them [in brackets: What the manufacturer named them] ~ a few words describing the shirt¹s fabric color
<> Sorrel [Burnt Orange] ~ a soft, pumpkin orange. Some Sorrel horses are darker (redder) in the winter and lighter in the summer. The term Sorrel, used more in the American West, is interchangeable with Chestnut for many red and light red horses. <> Blue Roan [Heather True Royal] ~ a misty medium blue. Blue Roans¹ light hairs mixed with black or grey, can give a smoky blue color. <> Frosted Brown [Heather Brown] ~ a misty, medium, maybe-mocha, brown. Frost / frosted is a form of roaning and may be seen primarily along a horse¹s topline. <> Palomino [Gold] ~ a soft, bright golden. Palomino horses come in a wide range of golden; most have a white (or lighter than body color) mane & tail. <> Cremello [Rich Cream] ~ a Cremello horse is a very pale palomino or other ³cream² color, usually with a white mane & tail. <> Smoky Grey [Asphalt] ~ a luscious dark grey (not Heathered, as so many grey tees/sweats are) but with a hint of brown. Horses designated as ³greys² can range from black to pure white, depending on their ages and genetics. They may have dappling, brindling or other variegation in coat patterning. Other horse colors can also be labeled ³smoky² when black hairs mix in, darkening parts of the body coat. <> Grulla Blue [Steel Blue] ~ the Spanish word grulla (and often grullo for males; pronounced groo-ya) refers to horses that, like roans, have quite various mixtures of light and dark hairs. Just as there are Red Roans, there¹re also Red Grullas. <> [Leaf] ~ a soft, medium green unlike any SFC has used before. No, there aren¹t any green horses I could find, but this Chinese Year of the Horse 2014 is also represented by the color GREEN and the element WOOD.
The Long-Sleeve shirts come in very few colors, and the only two of the above are the Asphalt Grey and Heather Brown. But we can add the familiar Royal Blue (not Heathered), making three colors for Long-Sleeves.
BTW, I know the idea of an Orange T-shirt can be pretty scary, but this certainly is not a Safety Orange or even a classic Halloween Orange. The closest I can come is to say: Go to the Paint Dept. of a Walmart. Find the sample card labeled WM028. The color at the top is October Pumpkin #10281; that¹s the orange of our Sorrel.
Decided yet what color you¹d like best? Feel free to pledge as many as you¹re tempted to. ;-) You¹re not obligated to buy any. But I bet you won¹t be able to resist. And just wait¹ll you see them!
