The traditional explanation for the slowdown is gravitational interactions with the Moon, but I like this answer much better! :D

There was a USGS paper recently that put forth the idea that some of these changes may be related to the slowing of the Earth's rotation, and they predicted 2018 would be an active year. Seems accurate so far. :)
