The utter bad luck of going over the edge just above the gorge, which while deep, is very narrow, boggles the mind. Their bad luck obviously was balanced by their good luck.
The narrowness of the gorge is what makes for the illusion in some photos that the trooper was below the truck.

From one angle it looks like the state trooper is directly below the truck and all they have to do is put a net between them and slide the people down. Then another angle shows that’s not exactly the case and the rescue is much more complicated. It must be especially of interest to you since you’ve been there. Bet you think of this every time you cross that bridge from now on!

It's like something out of a movie. I found several different videos. One interviewed the first rescuer who went over the side. The fact that there was a state trooper and tow truck on scene literally almost as it happened made for a good outcome.
