There was a USGS paper recently that put forth the idea that some of these changes may be related to the slowing of the Earth's rotation, and they predicted 2018 would be an active year. Seems accurate so far. :)

The earth is overdue for a polarity reversal. Humans have never been around for one of those previously. No one knows what happens. Maybe the Earth's rotation slows and then it reverses. Wouldn't that be a ride?
