As is normal, I had the radio on Sunday. I was in the kitchen when I heard Starman talking to Mark Sherman about the human species. It was unexpected that the program would use Starman as one of its pieces. http://www.thescore.org/lost-in-space/ The Lost In Space episode is new the week of Nov 14-20. Once in a while I hit some key combination that sends a message before I'm done. Anyway, on All Classical in Portland I think the repeat is for the prior week, so the Nov 14 episode will be repeat Nov 21. You can listen online if it isn't available in your local market. http://www.allclassical.org/ But if you're interested in hearing the current week episode you don't have to wait. There is an audio archive and right now under most recent episode you can hear the Lost In Space one. http://player.allclassical.org/archive/the-score My local station plays the current episode on Sunday so I'm listening to the Nov 14 one right now "live". Farewell to a Friend and Hello to a New One

I bid adieu to an old friend today as I took Penelope, my beloved silver BMW, to her permanent retirement home. The grand old dame was my constant companion for the past 16 years and 235,000 miles of countless fabulous trips in California, the Pacific Northwest, and Cross Country from West to East and North to South to New Jersey and Florida. She sported a first generation GPS, whose prim, proper, and occasional scolding voice inspired her name. She will be fondly remembered and always a part of me. Tomorrow I welcome Alexa, a Pearl White Cadillac CTS, to the family, with a snappy modern version of GPS and a screen twice as large as Penelope's. Alexa is named in honor of my father, Al, who always wanted a Cadillac and was just about to buy one when he died way too young. So this one's for you, Dad, and yes, Mom will drive it-at least around the block once. Chuck on the Beach with iPhone

There will be a lot more and that's part of the fun. Here's what we can tell you about the play so far... It's officially the eighth Harry Potter story Harry's name in the title is the giveaway that Mr. Potter is in this play. It's an official new story that picks up where the Deathly Hallows epilogue left off. Harry is an overworked Ministry of Magic<https://www.pottermore.com/explore-the-story/the-ministry-of-magic> employee, as well as a husband and father. The play will explore how Harry wrestles with his past and how his youngest son Albus Severus deals with the heavy burden of the family legacy. Now that does sound epic. This is also the very first time an official Harry Potter story has been presented on stage. Told in two epic parts J.K. Rowling announced on Twitter<https://www.pottermore.com/news/cursed-child-announcement> that: 'Due to the epic nature of the story we've been working on, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will be in two parts!' Logistically, that means you could see Part One as a matinee and Part Two in the evening or see them on separate nights in the same week. The Agriculture Museum where I volunteer is providing some 1920's/1930's equipment for this movie. Also some ladders, hand trucks, and lots and lots of wooden apple boxes. The set people also asked if we had 1930's era clothing but we don't. Oddly enough, not a month ago I was asked by a woman if we could use "two closets full of 1930's clothing". Of course I have no idea who she was since I knew it wasn't the kind of thing the museum would want. The film required an apple orchard with large, very tall, widely spaced trees like they grew them during the 1930's. The location in California where they were going to film the opening and closing scenes of the movie was dried up and brown from the drought. So, they reached out to a local apple packing firm here in Yakima. They had the orchard with old style trees, but no antique equipment. Enter the Ag museum... I do know generally where it is going to be filmed, but not exactly. The set dressers have been in Yakima since last Friday. They've visited the museum a couple of times and picked out some other things they want moved to the location. The apple packing company is going to haul the museum equipment out there on Friday. You could be in a major motion picture directed by and starring James Franco. No beard? Not even a man? Well, maybe you still could anyway. Portland-based casting company Extras Only put out two calls for extras this week for scenes in “In Dubious Battle,” the Franco-directed adaptation of the John Steinbeck novel. One called for men “with long beards” to play apple pickers. The other was broader, calling for men and women to play apple pickers. Shooting in Yakima is set for Sept. 27-28. Just where remains a secret. Previous scenes were shot months ago in Georgia. The notices do not say which if any cast members from the film will be in town on those days. In addition to Franco, the film features Bryan Cranston, Selena Gomez, Ashley Greene, Robert Duvall, Vincent D’Onofrio, Ed Harris, Zach Braff and Josh Hutcherson.
